Pacific Nature Recording Company
The Paper Orchestra’s first EP was technically PNR-001, the first release! The first pressing was number through 20 but we made 25 copies so all the band could have one! We were so proud of making every single copy by hand and then finally selling out, prompting a second pressing of 50 that we’re sometimes sold in conjunction with The Paper Orchestra’s compliation Up To Date.
Walk On By/Singing Over a Sunset EP was comprised of 5 songs, one of which was a cover.  The cellist/glockenspiel/melodica player Josh and I (Alex) first recorded the Neutral Milk Hotel cover over the summer for a compilation on the E6 Townhall. Using a mixer to mixdown 3 microphones onto my mom’s computer, we recorded 3 more songs over the summer.  Walk On By was an original by Stephen Rich, with a trumpet solo by Ryan. Singing Over a Sunset was a two part song written by me and primitively recorded. These two tracks were later re-recorded for the first Your Yellow Dress album. The remaining song is a live recording of the first great pop song I wrote, Summer Love, at the home of the legendary David Barclay of The Diskettes and The Endless Bummer fame.
We were young, idealistic and excited. This was the pre-recession days and the Bush hatred was finally wearing thin on everyone. No one had an inkling we’d be in the tank but have an African American President within 2 short years. Homespun pop songs captured in beautifully inadequate ways, is the best description I could give you for my first high school band’s, first release in August 2006.
